As a Harvard Law School faculty member, he became one of the early experts in federal labor law. In 1. 94. 8 he published the first case book on labor law for use in law schools, a book that was periodically updated and supplemented until 2. A prolific writer, he published dozens of articles on developments in labor relations. Even while teaching full- time, he became a noted labor arbitrator and wage stabilizer, in the latter role facing off against the United Mine Workers in an industrial dispute that touched on national security issues during the Korean War.
Nixon Manual GunmetalHe became Senator John F. Kennedy's labor advisor in connection with the senator's single major legislative project, a bill that would become the Landrum–Griffin amendments, and as a result of that role became head of Kennedy's presidential campaign's brain trust, recruiting intellectuals and coordinating policy research and speech- writing for the campaign. In 1. 96. 1 President Kennedy appointed him solicitor general, an office he held for four and a half years during which time he briefed and argued some of the most consequential decisions of the Warren Court. On return to Harvard he expanded on his experience in government to write on and teach constitutional law. As a high- profile liberal, he was chosen to head a blue ribbon commission that investigated the student strikes that closed down Columbia University in the Spring of 1. After that experience, he became Harvard's point man dealing with student disorders at Harvard for the next three years. Cox became internationally famous when under mounting pressure and charges of corruption against persons closely associated with Richard Nixon, Attorney General nominee Elliot Richardson was forced to appoint him (on account of his reputation for integrity and his independence from the president) as Special Prosecutor to oversee the federal criminal investigation into the Watergate burglary and other related crimes, corrupt activities and wrongdoings that became popularly known as the Watergate scandal. His investigation led him directly to the president himself, and he had a dramatic confrontation with Nixon when he subpoenaed the tapes the president had secretly recorded of his Oval Office conversations. When Cox refused a direct order from the White House to seek no further tapes or presidential materials, Nixon fired him in an incident that became known as the Saturday Night Massacre. Cox's calm, reasonable and impeccably dignified explanations of his positions earned him overwhelming support among the professional bar and a great deal of popularity among the country at large. His firing produced a public relations disaster for Nixon and set in motion impeachment proceedings. In the end, the United States Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the president and in favor of the position taken by Cox in an opinion written by Nixon appointee Chief Justice Warren Burger. Rather than face impeachment and trial with the tapes as evidence, Richard Nixon became the only United States president to resign. Cox returned to teaching, lecturing and writing for the rest of his life, giving his opinions on the role of the court in the development of the law and the role of the lawyer in society. Although he was recommended to President Jimmy Carter for a seat on the First Circuit Court of Appeals, his nomination fell victim to the dispute between the president and Senator Ted Kennedy. He was appointed to head several public- service, watchdog and good- government organizations, including serving for 1. Common Cause. In addition he argued two important Supreme Court cases, winning both: one concerning the constitutionality of federal campaign finance restrictions and the other the first case testing affirmative action. The New York Times summarized his career in a 1. Cox devoted his considerable prestige, energy, and legal skills to advancing the cause of higher government ethics. With public trust in government at a dangerously low ebb, Mr. Cox's message is more powerful than ever. He built on that start to become successful in his own right. Compared to the lawyers on his mother's side, his father (as Archibald Jr. He also served as a member of the New Jersey Rapid Transit Commission. Charles Callahan Perkins, the son of a wealthy merchant, never had need to earn money his entire life. So after Harvard, he studied drawing in Rome, established a studio in Paris and studied art history in Leipzig. Back in New England he dabbled in music, composing, presiding over the Handel and Haydn Society and becoming the largest subscriber to Boston Music Hall. Later he lectured and published books on art history and became one of the founders of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. Evarts near his estate in Windsor, Vermont. Evarts was seriously injured in the accident as well. He was a direct descendant of founding father Roger Sherman, a Connecticut signer of the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution. But more importantly Evarts, a much acclaimed New York litigator in the second half of the nineteenth century (who would go on to become United States attorney general, secretary of state and senator from New York), had been involved in a number of the great political litigations of his time, beginning with his defense of President Andrew Johnson in the trial of his impeachment in the Senate. Evarts, a devoted Republican, nevertheless faced down what seemed to be the unstoppable determination of the Republicans to oust the Democrat and accidental president. Cox heard early on stories of Evarts's involvement in the famous Lemmon Slave Case and others. Evarts had built six mansions (one for each of his children) on his property in Windsor, where he was a local legend in Cox's time. Cox's grandmother Elizabeth Perkins was given the property later known as Runnemeade Lodge. It was here that Archibald Cox spent each of his summers (beginning when he was less than a month old) until his family's circumstances changed when he was in college. This was where Cox developed his affinity for things New England and absorbed his New England mannerisms. The summer scene in Windsor and nearby Cornish, New Hampshire was the resort for numerous figures of turn of the century culture (including Judge Learned Hand). It was also where the numerous lawyers (including Fanny's father Edward Clifford Perkins) connected with the Evarts were encountered. Cox summarized these influences in an interview in 1. My ancestors on both sides were lawyers, and it's hard to think of a time when I wasn't going to be a lawyer. His home, a Dutch colonial built on a 9- acre plot, featured a tennis court, maids quarters and an apartment above the garage for the chauffeur. As for the family's relations with the staff, Cox later said: . At least that's my picture. But the symbols of status were probably much more important than any ideas of status themselves. Paul's Sheldon admissions building exhibits the gothic architecture set in the idyllic rural paradise typical of the quintessential elite New England boys school. Cox Sr. And while Archie did not object to the plan, Cox Sr. Archie was sent attended the private Wardlaw School in Edison, New Jersey until he was fourteen. When it came time to apply to St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, Cox Sr. Paul's and how his great- grandfather Perkins was an important trustee. His son was duly admitted. Cox would later tell an interviewer of the fact that kept his career on an upward trajectory: . Paul, situated in rural New England only 6. Windsor and populated by the sons of the . Most notably he developed as a strong public presenter. In his final year he won Hugh Camp Memorial Cup for public speaking and lead the school's debate team to defeat Groton It was during this period that he read Beveridge's Life of John Marshall, which was an important early ingredient in Cox's progressive view of the law. With a warm recommendation from the head- master (and family connections), Cox was able to enter Harvard College in 1. Harvard. When you go to law school, you’ll have begun your career. He joined Harvard's Finals Club, the Delphic Club, nicknamed then as the . He majored in History, Government and Economics and did slightly better than . In February his father died at 5. In the midst of the Depression she was forced to take in boarders. Paul to request financial assistance for her son Robert's tuition. For Archie summers at Windsor would end, for he had to earn money, the first summer as a tutor with the family of the doctor who had tended to his dying father (and to whom the family's horse was also sold). The tragedy also affected Cox's grades, although allowance for his father's death was noted in the official records. Cox would experience another tragedy in his junior year. He had developed a serious relationship with Radcliffe student named Connie Holmes. He had even introduced her to his family. That fall she suffered an attack and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital outside of Cambridge. On her release, her mother took her to Europe for convalescence. Toward the end of his junior year Cox received word that Connie had committed suicide with sleeping pills in France. The news delivered a shock and created a loss which he remembered throughout his life. During Cox's senior year he was able to give his full attention to academics. For his senior thesis he proposed analyzing the constitutional differences of the composition between the Senate and House through early American history. His advisor, Paul Buck, told him he did not . Cox took up the challenge and completed Senatorial Saucer. Presidential tax returns: It started with Nixon. Will it end with Trump? Such a refusal would overturn a precedent maintained by every president since Jimmy Carter - - and extend Trump's refusal to make his returns public during the campaign. In a tweet Monday, Conway said that Trump would not release the documents as long as he's under audit by the IRS. That was the same explanation he gave during the campaign, even though IRS audits do not restrict anyone from publishing tax returns. Presidents have been automatically audited for some time, said Joe Thorndike, a historian with Tax Analysts and director of the Tax History Project. But there's also no law that says he can't release them. The scandal led to one of Nixon's most famous quotes. Since Nixon, every president has released tax returns, except for Gerald Ford, who instead made public a decade's worth of summary data about his federal taxes. And we have to assume that it can, because there is no backstop. Nixon released his returns in response to these sorts of questions. Some major party candidates have released decades' worth of returns, while others have publicized only the top two pages of their form 1. It's not clear that it will survive this. Aircraft Review : Airbus A3. JARDesign. JARDesign is well known for their excellent (if slightly misnamed) A3. This is version 10.40 of the manual to the home and professional versions of X-Plane (X-Plane. Cirrus Vision SF50 North American X. Fiat CR.42 Falco Paris Jet. This exquisite Cirrus Vision Jet Mahogany Model is handcrafted by our master craftsmen. Keep hot or cold beverages handy. A3. 20ceo (current engine option). When the aircraft was first released in December 2. X- Plane to the next level in flying immersion and systems, it was without doubt a new yardstick in design. At that time it was also slightly buggy, certainly in its flight modeling and profiles. But over the years the aircraft has become one of the very best in simulation and that has been mostly by the constant improvements and new features that has kept this aircraft ahead of the pack and created now one of the best experiences in X- Plane. The announcement that JARDesign's second aircraft would be the A3. A3. 20neo and a perfect fit in every respect. Only the thought of a good A3. A3. 20neo and its features would certainly make you want to start your savings and adding up your pennies (or nickles) for the release of this aircraft. The nature of this review is to find if the aircraft can live up to or even surpass the sort of hype and expectations that is leveled upon the aircraft in relation to its forebear's success. If you already have the A3. I mean by that, so to those users this A3. Airbus philosophy of the way they design their aircraft as well. But if you are new to these sort of simulation designs then the aircraft is demanding of your skills and requires a learning curve (or study) to get the very best out of the aircraft, anyone can certainly fly this aircraft, but it is also demanding to a level that requires time and practise to extract that complete performance and make that perfection of commercial flight in a simulator. In most cases here it is in the area of setting the aircraft up correctly and then flying the A3. So you will need to invest your energies in those areas to feel the full power of the simulation. To a point it is that like in the real world, pilots usually spend their time on one aircraft for periods of time to be a professional on that airframe, and to a point simulation in X- Plane is now requiring users to invest time and the skills to get to the same proficiency to get to the same level of skill and knowledge to get the return on your investment. The aircraft is simply superbly modeled, simply first rate. Engine design and textures is very well executed, you can almost smell the Jet- A fuel around this aircraft. The huge by- pass blades are perfect and the engine pylon is filled with great detail that is usually over- looked like vents and mesh screens. The wing is very complete as well with perfect spars, and as the hydraulics are powered off the ailerons droop in their loss of power. Absolutely perfect design with everything created, as they are a perfect reproduction of the real gear and everything is reproduced here in fine detail. Highlights are the wheel rims and the hydraulic lines, up in the wheel bay is also few items, but the only slight is the connection of the main support link to the airframe, it just rests on a texture image. The whole aircraft glows in the warm sunshine (yes the sun does shine sometimes in the UK) and you want to get on board to see what have inside. But first we will note the menu system. Menu. You have a drop- down menu for the A3. X- Plane plug- in menu. First is Ground Equipment Call and. Ground Equipment Remove. You can call all your Ground Equipment by selecting the first menu (Ground Equipment Call) or remove them all the same way (Ground Equipment Remove). When activated all the ground equipment will appear and then move into their respective positions around the aircraft, then the doors or hatches will open to accommodate them. Not only is the animation first rate, but the actual vehicle design and quality is excellent as well. It take a short while for the equipment to place themselves and animate the dropping of the stands and lift their catering boxes or the stairs into the correct positions, and each set of equipment can be selected to work separately in the Fuel/Weight or Catering and the Stairway from the menu. If the fuel truck is selected the pop- up fuel panel is displayed on the screen. I would personally like a manual choice here as I like the covered version better than the open stairs. Detailing is again a highlight, animated latches open/close and even the cargo door catches and locks are detailed.. The quality or the non- fuzzyness of the seating is excellent as there is no short cuts here to save frame- rate by putting in poor textures. So the cabin is a quality cabin right through the aircraft. Views out of the cabin windows is excellent, and you can easily find that perfect viewpoint if you like the replays of takeoffs and landing from the passenger view like I do. Externally looking into the aircraft you have a real realistic view, on the ground or in the air. And that is harder to achieve than it looks, but it works well here. Cockpit. Into the office and you won't be disappointed. This cockpit is really beautifully designed. Quality seeps from every area, the panels are simply gorgeous beyond belief in their textures. Every knob, switch and lever is perfectly Airbus recreated and useable. Nothing can be really singled out because it is all quite perfect. One note is that the cabin door can't be opened?, but you can also move easily into the rear cabin if you set up your X- Plane views, so a quick wizz to your favorite passenger seat view and a second wizz back to the office is easily done.. Power. It is time to set up the aircraft for flight, so first we need the power to come to life. As with JARDesign's A3. It also turns off your X- Plane . You now have to align the three air data inertial reference units (ADIRU) top left of the overhead panel. Now the aircraft is powering up and the display's will come alive. It was a feature of the A3. A3. 30 here) and you had to power up, align the ADIRU's, set up all the systems and god knows what more before actually flying the aircraft. Don't get me wrong, I love that sequential process and the feeling of really setting the startup of the aircraft from scratch, but it was also to me its biggest drawback in using the aircraft. I finally refined the process down to 1. I timed it) but that is most times 1. I wanted to go right through the whole process again. In other words I would usually select another A3. I had spare to fly or complete a review. The A3. 32 here does need a set up process as well, but there are thankfully here a few quicker routes to get flying quicker than the . You still have to set the GPS alignment and put in your route or flightplan, but otherwise the aircraft is ready to go, and it saves you a lot of time and waiting.. Setting up the MCDU/FMCThe Airbus A3. Thales and Smiths Aerospace . If you have flown the JARDesign Thales then there is nothing new here except the weights and performance of the A3. A3. 20 aircraft. If you know how to program the Thales system or know the system on the A3. The aircraft will align itself and it will take 7 minutes to do so, in some ways this is still similar to the alignment on the A3. Here you can insert your passengers, cargo and fuel requirements and select the right weight for the aircraft, it shows you your Co. G (Center of Gravity) as well. When ready, you select the Fuel/Weight from the menu to bring the fuel truck to the aircraft and begin loading your fuel for the flight. This can be seen best by selecting the Fuel menu on the SD (Systems Display) center panel and INIT Fuel Prediction page on the MCDU. To access this secondary INIT page you select the right arrow key on the MCDU keypad to access the right page noted by the arrows on the top of the display . It is highly important this Fuel Prediction page is correct and activated as it will afect many other functions of the aircraft in flight. Perf (Performance)You can set up your performance preferences via the . Most boxes are required to be filled and not glossed over, and you can set your FLEX modes correctly here also. This is the guts to flying the aircraft precisely. Route. The Thales FMC is actually quite easy to program in setting up a route, the version on this A3. Creating a route and installing it is quite easy and quick. Select the F- PLN Key to start your flightplan. Both of your DEP (Departure) and ARR (Arrival) airports are already shown. To start then select your DEP airport (key 1 left) of which in this case is EGKK (Gatwick). Then select your runway which today is RWY2. L (a good feature is the noted length of the runway on your RWY selection), Then your SID (Standard Instrument Departure) which is DVR1. X (Dover) with NO TRANS. All your selections are listed across of the top of the MCDU display. You can use Airports, VOR, NDB and Airways as points (fixes) on the flightplan. I use VOR fixes mainly because they are very easy to insert and have distances that can be checked built in. So my first VOR fix after DVR is LEQ (Lesquin) which is inserted. To insert a fix you type in the fix in the scratch box, in this case my next VOR fix is RLP (Rolampont) and to insert it I press the key to overwrite my last Fix of LEQ? From this point on I just continued to insert all my waypoints to the start of the STAR at LIRF with the last fix of GRO (Grosseto). Next is to select your STAR approach and I am using TAQ1. C and that is inserted via the relevant key and also NO TRANS is inserted on the right side Key, the STAR arrival selections are listed across of the top of the MCDU display. Pressing. NOTE: It is significantly important you select the right ARR Runway.. To do this is simple, just press CLR key to put . To do this you select INSERT (Key 6 Right) to activate the flightplan which will turn green. You have the option here to also CANCEL the flightplan to start again by pressing (Key 6 Left). You can activate the flightplan (Green) at any point during the setting up of the flightplan even if the flightplan is not complete. Raritan PB000667 Re:View PB000006 ReVision PB006821. Ammolite is an opal- like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is made of the fossilized shells of ammonites, which in turn are composed primarily of aragonite, the same mineral contained in nacre, with a microstructure inherited from the shell. It is one of few biogenic gemstones; others include amber and pearl. In 1. 98. 1, ammolite was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), the same year commercial mining of ammolite began. It was designated the official gemstone of the City of Lethbridge, Alberta in 2. The latter is a trade name given to the gemstone by the Alberta- based mining company Korite.

Marcel Charbonneau and his business partner Mike Berisoff were the first to create commercial doublets of the gem in 1. They went on to form Ammolite Minerals Ltd. Properties. The shell itself may contain a number of trace elements, including: aluminium; barium; chromium; copper; iron; magnesium; manganese; strontium; titanium; and vanadium. Its crystallography is orthorhombic. Its hardness is 4. The refractive index of Canadian material (as measured via sodium light, 5. Under ultraviolet light, ammolite may fluoresce a mustard yellow. An iridescent opal- like play of color is shown in fine specimens, mostly in shades of green and red; all the spectral colors are possible, however. The iridescence is due to the microstructure of the aragonite: unlike most other gems, whose colors come from light absorption, the iridescent color of ammolite comes from interference with the light that rebounds from stacked layers of thin platelets that make up the aragonite. The thicker the layers, the more reds and greens are produced; the thinner the layers, the more blues and violets predominate. Reds and greens are the most commonly seen colors, owing to the greater fragility of the finer layers responsible for the blues. When freshly quarried, these colors are not especially dramatic; the material requires polishing and possibly other treatments in order to reveal the colors' full potential. The ammolite itself is actually a very thin sheet, ca. Rarely is ammolite without its matrix, which is typically a grey to brown shale, chalky clay, or limestone. The cracking results in a tessellated appearance, sometimes described as a . Ammolite mined from deeper deposits may be entirely smooth or with a rippled surface. Occasionally a complete ammonite shell is recovered with its structure well- preserved: fine, convoluted lines delineate the shell chambers, and the overall shape is suggestive of a nautilus. While these shells may be as large as 9. Most fossilized shells have had their aragonite pseudomorphously replaced by calcite or pyrite, making the presence of ammolite particularly uncommon. Ammonites were cephalopods, that thrived in tropical seas until becoming extinct along with the dinosaurs at the end of the Mesozoic era. The ammonites that form ammolite inhabited a prehistoric, inland subtropical sea that bordered the Rocky Mountains—this area is known today as the Cretaceous or Western Interior Seaway. As the ammonites died, they sank to the bottom and were buried by layers of bentoniticmud that eventually became shale. Many gem- quality ammonites are found within sideriteconcretions. These sediments preserved the aragonite of the shells, preventing it from converting to calcite. However, small deposits have been found as far south as Central Utah which also contains gem- quality ammolite. Most commercial mining operations have been conducted along the banks of the St. Mary River, in an area south of and between the town of Magrath and the city of Lethbridge. Roughly half of all ammolite deposits are contained within the Kainah (Kainaiwa) reserve, and its inhabitants play a major role in ammolite mining. Since its founding in 1. Korite has operated primarily within the reservation. The company maintains an agreement with the Kainah (Blood) tribe, with Korite paying the tribe royalties based on how much land the company has mined. The pits are further examined by hand, and commercial production is supplemented by individuals who sell their surface- picked findings to Korite and several other producers. Approximately 5. 0% of the ammolite mined is suitable for jewelry. Korite, the largest miner of ammolite, produces over 9. The ammolite deposits are stratified into several layers: the shallowest of these layers, named the . The ammolite within this layer is covered by sideriteconcretions and is usually cracked—this is the crush material. It is the most common and (generally speaking) the least valuable of ammolite. Beginning twenty meters below the crush material is the . This is the sheet material; due to its depth it is rarely mined. It is also much less fractured, and therefore the more valuable type of ammolite. The company employs over 2. Prospectors who wish to mine ammolite deposits on Crown land must apply to the Alberta Department of Energy for a lease. These leases are not regularly offered; as of 2. CAD $6. 25 application fee, with an annual rental fee of CAD $3. However, this system is not yet standardized and some vendors may use their own systems. The grade and therefore the value of an ammolite gemstone is determined by the following criteria. Red and green are far more common than blue or purple due to the latter's fragility (see properties). There are also certain hues, like crimson or violet or gold, which are derived from a combination of the primary colors, that are the rarest and in highest demand. The most valuable grades have three or more primary colors or 1–2 bright and even colors, with the lowest grades having one comparatively dull color predominant. The way the colors . In higher grades this variation is almost prismatic in its scope, while lower grades show very little variation. Rotational range is how far the specimen can be turned while maintaining its play of color; the best rotate 3. Intermediate grades have ranges of 2. The quality of the polish is also a factor. The matrix is not visible in finer grades, and there should be no foreign minerals breaking up or diminishing the iridescence. The thickness of the ammolite layer is also an important factor: after polishing, the ammolite is only 0. The rarest and most valuable are thick enough to stand alone, with only a thin portion of its original matrix (not exceeding 1. Other treatments are also commonly undertaken; all other factors being equal, the less treatment an ammolite gem has received, the more valuable it is. Calibrated stones—that is, stones fashioned into standard dimensions that will fit most jewelry settings—may also command a higher price. Treatments. The thin, delicate sheets in which ammolite occurs are also problematic; for these reasons, most material is impregnated with a clear epoxy or other synthetic resin to stabilize the flake- prone ammolite prior to cutting. Although the tessellated cracking cannot be repaired, the epoxy prevents further flaking and helps protect the relatively soft surface from scratching. The impregnation process was developed over a number of years by Korite in partnership with the Alberta Research Council. Impregnated and epoxy- coated ammolite first entered the market in 1. Because the ammolite layer is usually mere fractions of a millimeter in thickness, most ammolite gems are in fact composite stones: these usually take the form of two- part doublets, with the ammolite layer adhered to a dark backing material. This is usually the matrix or mother rock from which the ammolite was quarried; black onyx or glass could also be used as backing. In composites where the ammolite layer is exceptionally thin, a third component is used: this constitutes a triplet, with a durable and transparent convex topping piece. This cap may be either synthetic spinel, synthetic corundum, synthetic quartz, or in lower- end productions, glass. The convex cap acts as a lens and has the effect of enhancing the ammolite's iridescent display. The detection of these treated and composite stones is relatively simple via inspection with a loupe; however, certain jewelry setting styles—such as those with closed backs—can complicate things. A triplet can be identified by inspecting the stone in profile; the top of the stone can then be seen to be domed and transparent, with no play of color. If the dome is made of glass, bubbles, swirl marks, and scratches may be present; the harder synthetic materials are optically flawless. Although the vast majority of commercial- grade ammolite has been treated in some way, a small fraction of production requires no treatment other than cutting and polishing. Ideally, any treatments should be disclosed at the time of sale. Imitations. These include: labradorite (also known as spectrolite), an iridescent feldspar that may also be of Canadian origin; and broad- flash black opal. Neither are convincing substitutes, and the latter is actually of greater value than ammolite. Indeed, ammolite is often used as an imitation of black opal. An even less convincing possibility is Slocum stone, a common glass- based imitation of opal. Blues and purples are much more pervasive in labradorite, and in both it and opal the play of color is seen to roll across the stone unlike the comparatively restricted play of color in ammolite. In Slocum stone, the play of color takes the form of tinsel- like patches. The visible structure is also considerably different; in the imitations, the body of the stone is transparent to translucent from certain angles, whereas ammolite is entirely opaque. Gemologically speaking, ammolite can be grouped with the shell- based marbles. This group includes lumachella or . Found in Italy and Austria, lumachella is rarely if ever used in jewelry; rather, it is used as a decorative facing stone or in mosaics. The iridescence of lumachella is fragmentary and not nearly as brilliant as that of ammolite. It is also regarded as the value of one country’s currency in relation to another currency. In this case it is said that the price of a dollar in relation to yen is ? The spot exchange rate refers to the current exchange rate. The forward exchange rate refers to an exchange rate that is quoted and traded today but for delivery and payment on a specific future date. In order to determine which is the fixed currency when neither currency is on the above list (i. This reduces rounding issues and the need to use excessive numbers of decimal places. There are some exceptions to this rule: for example, the Japanese often quote their currency as the base to other currencies. It is the ratio of the number of units of a given country's currency necessary to buy a market basket of goods in the other country, after acquiring the other country's currency in the foreign exchange market, to the number of units of the given country's currency that would be necessary to buy that market basket directly in the given country. There are various ways to measure RER. For example, the purchasing power of the US dollar relative to that of the euro is the dollar price of a euro (dollars per euro) times the euro price of one unit of the market basket (euros/goods unit) divided by the dollar price of the market basket (dollars per goods unit), and hence is dimensionless. This is the exchange rate (expressed as dollars per euro) times the relative price of the two currencies in terms of their ability to purchase units of the market basket (euros per goods unit divided by dollars per goods unit). If all goods were freely tradable, and foreign and domestic residents purchased identical baskets of goods, purchasing power parity (PPP) would hold for the exchange rate and GDP deflators (price levels) of the two countries, and the real exchange rate would always equal 1. The rates provided in this report are not meant to be used by the general public for conducting foreign currency conversion transactions. The authors suggest a new hybrid neural network which is a combination of the standard RBF neural network, a genetic algorithm, and a moving average. The moving average is supposed to enhance the outputs of the network using the error part of the original neural network. Authors test the suggested model on high- frequency time series data of USD/CAD and examine the ability to forecast exchange rate values for the horizon of one day. To determine the forecasting efficiency, they perform a comparative statistical out- of- sample analysis of the tested model with autoregressive models and the standard neural network. They also incorporate genetic algorithm as an optimizing technique for adapting parameters of ANN which is then compared with standard backpropagation and backpropagation combined with K- means clustering algorithm. Finally, the authors find out that their suggested hybrid neural network is able to produce more accurate forecasts than the standard models and can be helpful in eliminating the risk of making the bad decision in decision- making process. Profits or losses accrue as the exchange rate of that currency fluctuates on the open market. It is extremely rare that individual traders actually see the foreign currency. Instead, they typically close out their buy or sell commitments and calculate net gains or losses based on price changes in that currency relative to the dollar over time. The participants include large banks, multinational corporations, governments, and speculators. Individual traders comprise a very small part of this market. Because of the volatility in the price of foreign currency, losses can accrue very rapidly, wiping out an investor’s down payment in short order. It has to pay suppliers in other countries with a currency different from its home country’s currency. The home country is where a company is headquartered. The firm is likely to be paid or have profits in a different currency and will want to exchange it for its home currency. Even if a company expects to be paid in its own currency, it must assess the risk that the buyer may not be able to pay the full amount due to currency fluctuations. A Quick Guide to Teaching R Programming to Computational Biology Students. This brief article is an introduction to teaching R, based on my experience in teaching computational biology graduate students. I provide resources and suggestions for teaching R and describe common difficulties faced by students when learning R. Lecture material. Fun Examples for Teaching Linear and Nonlinear Circuits. Commons claimed orthodox economics had neglected collective action. Most students starting our master's programme have not previously seen R; at first, we assumed that students would self- learn R during the course. However, this proved to be unsatisfactory, as students often said that R was too difficult to learn on their own on top of their assigned coursework. In response to this problem, we created an intensive set of lectures and lab sessions covering both an introduction to programming in R and a refresher in statistics (the introductory statistics material is not covered here). Given that students come from different backgrounds, some with experiences of programming in other languages and others without any prior programming experience, it is difficult to know at exactly which level to aim a lecture course. Our approach has been to provide lecture material containing concepts that may not immediately be understood by novice programmers, but will serve as a reference for them later in the year. Instead, the lectures contain advanced material that can challenge students who have programming experience. Our lecture notes are available in Text S1. The Bioconductor project also offers useful teaching material (http: //www. A key aim when writing these lecture notes was to focus on teaching R as a general programming language, rather than to focus on issues specific to computational biology. Other lecture courses on our master's programme provide additional R material relevant to particular topics in computational biology. Assignments/lab sessions. The best way that the students learn a programming language is by actually using the language on problem sets. We therefore arrange lab sessions during which students work through introductory material on R. After becoming familiar with R, we then suggest they work on some problems in computational biology. Good sources for such problems include . Also requires opportunities for output. The generic framework for teaching and learning languages in English. It is worth providing simple examples for generating graphs that can be used as templates (as given in the lecture notes) for their work. Students often fail to realise the difference between vector and bitmap formats, and this is worth discussing in class to suggest they generate graphs using either PDF or Postscript devices, rather than bitmap formats. R currently has two systems for generating graphs: “base” and “grid”. The base system is much simpler and easier to use, and so we recommend students learn this system (and most introductory books and resources also use base graphics). However, students should be made aware of the grid package, which allows for much more flexibility over generating graphics. In particular, the lattice package . R provides infrastructure for this in the form of Sweave documents.
Sweave documents contain R code surrounded by documentation written in either La. Te. X, HTML, or Open. Office Writer. The document is processed to extract and run the R code; output (either textual or graphical) is then inserted back into the document which is then typeset. An example of this is shown in Supporting Information files Text S2 and Text S3 (estimating the value of ). Students should be taught about the idea of reproducible research, and the idea should be reinforced by asking them to submit their coursework in the form of Sweave documents. Reproducible research also encourages students to run their code in batch mode (whereas most students initially prefer working interactively with R). As students need to know La. Te. X to write Sweave documents, we also provide a separate lab session on La. Te. X. Larger pieces of reproducible research are likely to be released in an R package (containing both data and code), but teaching students how to build packages is beyond the scope of our current course. Writing Sweave documents takes much longer than writing R scripts, but it leads to self- documenting work that is likely to be understandable by many researchers long after it has been written. Textbooks. The R website currently lists over 8. R- books. html). Here I give a short, non- exhaustive list of books that I recommend to students to complement lecture notes and to show applications of R in computational biology. Some of the books are quite advanced and are likely to be useful for students only after they have gained sufficient experience. I also take these books to lab sessions so that students can see which book would be most useful for them. For a general introduction to R, Introductory Statistics with R. A First Course in Statistical Programming with R. Finally, for students wishing to explore the graphing facilities of R, R Graphics. First, the introductory text on Computational Genome Analysis. Stochastic Modelling for Systems Biology. An advanced book for those already familiar with R is R Programming for Bioinformatics. Finally, a general text for biological modelling is Dynamical Models in Biology. Although the book does not describe R, the online supplementary information provides a comprehensive introduction to R and shows how to use R to simulate the models discussed in the book, along with numerous exercises (http: //www. DMBsupplements. html). Useful web sites. R has numerous online resources that students should be encouraged to explore. Here are some additional sites that we have found useful: http: //www. Powered by Google, this site searches numerous online R resources, including documentation, source code, and books. It also searches the numerous email lists hosted by the R project; R- help in particular is a useful list for people to learn about R. R. html. A very useful guide for students who know Matlab; it provides a comprehensive list of Matlab functions and the corresponding functions in R. This site provides a gallery of advanced graphic examples, along with the R code used to generate those plots. Common problems encountered when learning RStudents with previous programming experience usually find learning R quite straightforward. It has a rich set of online documentation for each function, complete with examples, to help learn the language. However, there are some common problems that occur when learning R, described briefly below, along with suggestions for helping students. Syntax errors and getting started. The syntax of R can be difficult for students to acquire, and students often report that they spend many hours debugging simple problems. We encourage students to ask a colleague for help, as often these errors are simple, yet frustrating to spot. We use a wiki to allow students to post questions or exchange tips and example code. Furthermore, although R has a rich set of documentation for inbuilt functions, students often report that it is hard to discover these functions, as they do not know what to search for. With this in mind, our introductory lecture notes were written to describe most core R functions with which we would expect a student eventually to become familiar during the year. Of course, it is infeasible to provide a complete list, especially given the vast number of numerical routines that come with R, and for this we suggest using the Rseek internet search tool, described above. Lecturers should also give hints as to which functions might be of use for particular assignments. Pre- allocation of variables. In R, variables do not need to be defined before use; they are simply created when required. A common problem with this is demonstrated in the following code: npts <. A key problem here is that on line 3, y has been initialised to be the value zero, which is a vector of length one. Within each cycle of the loop, the length of y needs to increase by one, and so R silently reallocates the vector y to be long enough to store the new result. The code works, but is inefficient, especially when looping over many values. A simple solution is to pre- allocate the vector when the length of the vector is known in advance. In this case, we can change line 3 to read: y <. For example, if x and y are vectors of the same length, then z = x+y will create a vector z, where for each element i, z. This is called vectorization, and students familiar with other programming languages, such as C, often use slow and inefficient for loops to perform these calculations. It is worth reminding students at several stages while they are learning R that they should try to think about how to vectorize their code. Sometimes this requires them to learn new R functions, such as the apply family of commands. For example, if we wish to compute the mean of each column of a matrix mat, rather than writing an explicit loop over each column, we can do: x <. In particular, it should be explained that R is a functional language and hence “everything is an object”, which is why functions, such as mean above, can be passed as arguments to other functions. Continuing the example in the previous section, at first glance it may not seem suitable for vectorizing, given the if- then test operating on each element. However, R has the function ifelse, which simplifies the threshold example to: npts <. Vectorized solutions are often shorter, too, implying that there is less code to maintain. About This Series: This series of narrative posts will go through the things I saw, heard, learned, and all the suggestions I received from the various Chinese coaches and athletes I trained with at the city, provincial, and national levels. During my training adventure I met world champions, world record holders, and a very special Olympian. Arriving in China and Meeting Coach Fang. I arrived in China planning to visit my family, namely my elderly grandparents, who all live in Huainan city, Anhui province. This is a relatively small city of ~2 million people. I did not know for sure if there would be any weightlifting facilities accessible to a foreigner in this city prior to coming, but luckily I was put in contact with a man who I will refer to as Coach Fang. Coach Fang is a former national/international level weightlifter having competed with the Anhui provincial team during his prime, but retired early to start his family. He is now the director of the Huainan city athletics school and acts as the school’s head weightlifting coach. Currently, weightlifting in China thrives on the kids in rural parts of the country who see the sport as a way to escape the countryside and possibly earn a living as an athlete to care for their family. The last time there were lifters training in Huainan, one of them got sent to the provincial team and quit after a few months because it was too much pressure, and the other was pulled out by his grandmother who was concerned about the risk of hurting his back. The facilities in Huainan city, after some cleaning up. When I met Coach Fang at the athletics school, he was very welcoming. He seemed happy that someone was finally going to use the weightlifting equipment. The gym was just a dusty room with a not yet built weightlifting platform, two areas padded with rubber matting, and a few cigarette butts scattered over the ceramic tiled floor in between. There was a bench for supine pressing, a bench for chest- supported barbell rows . Coach Fang picked out a 2. The bar was freaking cold since there was no heating in this room and several of the windows were broken. Today’s lessons would be in the full Snatch, and the Back Squat. Snatch – Overhead Position. When I was warming up with the bar, Coach Fang immediately stopped me and told me to internally rotate my shoulders in the overhead position. Reddit: the front page of. Now, while I certainly encourage people to pursue Olympic lifting competitively. The History of Weightlifting Shoes. Olympic-style Weightlifting” by Jim Schmitz. This surprised me because I was always taught in the past that externally rotating the shoulders overhead allowed for the most stable position and would allow the bones and joints of the upper extremities to support the weight. Coach Fang internally rotating my shoulders into the proper overhead position. Coach Fang laughed and said that with the elbows pointed down and shoulders externally rotated, the bar is not secure and can be easily missed in front or behind. He said that it is important to always point the elbows back and shrug the shoulders up, keeping the shoulders internally rotated and the bar “locked in place” (See photo of Coach Fang internally rotating my shoulders). Now if you try this at home with a bar or broomstick, notice how this forces your neck forward and pushes your head way in front? Look familiar? I will say this now; internal rotation of the shoulders was trend throughout my Chinese weightlifting tour. Importance of Back Tightness. The next thing he emphasized was the importance of back tightness – from the moment you grip the bar until you receive the down signal, your spinal erector muscles must be rock solid. He noticed in the video I showed him of a recent snatch PR that my back was tight during the pull, but relaxed during in the receiving position. A starter Olympic weightlifting program to. Lin Qingfeng (CHN, M6. Olympic gold medalist pushing his head forward to lock his shoulders in place.(Photo by Damon Kelly/Hookgrip)To think, I always thought I had decent mobility, because I could sink my hips low to catch a snatch. Be patient with the bar until it reaches the “power point” and then “use my rocket fuel to explode!” He pointed at my high upper thigh a few cm below the crease of my hip and said, “this is the power point” AKA where to initiate the second pull. He pointed out some things that I was already doing that he liked: keeping my arms loose and elbows pointed outwards on the pull (this is also internal rotation of the shoulders)finishing the pull with full knee and hip extension, and keeping my chest high throughout the first pull. He suggested I work on my second pull by including above- the- knee hang muscle snatch, high hang snatch high pulls, and upper body bodybuilding work into my programming. This was my only snatch workout with Coach Fang, but don’t worry there will be more snatching later on in the series. On to the. When I told him I haven’t tested a one- rep max back squat in over a year, he was not happy. He started spotting me on every rep of my squats to get a feel for how much force I was putting into the bar, and again he was not too pleased. After a few sets, he told me my priority in training should be to back squat at least 2. KGs to my total than anything else (I estimate my current max to be around 1. He said that for me, it is even OK to do squats as the first (or only) exercise in a workout. Squatting Technique. In terms of squatting technique, Coach Fang said to squat down until my hamstrings hit my calves, but not so low that I lose tightness in my lower back. He told me to try to move my hips in a more vertical motion and not to have too much movement from front- to- back and that if I have to move my hips out of line to reach depth then that is too low as well. He said my center of balance should stay the same throughout the movement. The chest should be kept high and the back tight but not hyperextended/kyphotic. Powerlifting in Personal Training Programs. Muscle fiber characteristics and performance correlates of male Olympic style. When standing up out of the hole, push the chest up – not up and back, thus hyperextending the back – just up. Since he said squatting should be my priority, he also put in his two cents about programming. Why the US Sucks at Olympic Lifting. Jim Schmitz, Arthur Dreschler. I told him I train 4 times per week and usually squat in 3 of those workouts. He said it’s fine to squat 3 times per week, but 2 times is enough (that’s including front and back). He said that making progress in volume was a good indicator of leg strength improvement, which I did not understand at first but as I learned more about the norms in Chinese training programs, the more I understood what he meant.(More about how to choose weights in a “Chinese program” will be detailed in further along in the series.)After squatting came the REAL important stuff. Triceps extensions. Ok, maybe doing overhead triceps extensions with a 2. MUST use bodybuilding exercises to progress in the snatch and C& JCoach Fang said that a weightlifter MUST use bodybuilding exercises to progress in the snatch and clean and jerk. According to him, to elevate the bar you use your quadriceps, glutes, and trapezius (in that order of importance). For every other aspect of the lifts, you depend on your back and your small muscles. Coach Fang’s prescription includes training one or two small muscles at the end of every workout, stressing the importance of upper back, lats, triceps, obliques, and abs in particular. After I finished lifting, Coach Fang made me jog a few laps around the front entrance garden. This was to loosen me up and cool down after the workout. General Points. Coach Fang described the Chinese weightlifting technique as: There is no explicit elaboration on lifting technique other than achieving those four points, which refer to keeping the bar as close to the body’s center- line as possible throughout the lift, moving your body and the barbell as fast as possible, keeping your body low rather than lifting the barbell high, and ALWAYS being in a balanced position at any point in the lift and in total control of the bar. As for the approach to training and programming, Coach Fang said that weightlifting has a strength component and a skill component, but athletes often forget the importance of strength so it is the coaches duty to keep the athlete’s body getting stronger, while it’s the athlete’s job to keep getting their mind stronger. For protective equipment, Coach Fang said to use only equipment when that particular body part starts feeling sore or weak. For a belt, he said use it when I start losing back tightness during a workout. He was more liberal with wrist wrap use, but only on overhead movements. In terms of general programming, Coach Fang emphasized the importance of making every rep perfect in training. He said that the national team training programs are not very rigid and allow for a LOT of auto- regulation in terms of reps and weights at the athlete’s own discretion. As I learned later on, Chinese programs heavily depend on the athlete’s own ability to choose the right weight and reps for a given exercise. Geometry. Net - Sports: Olympic Liftinge. How often do you walk into a gym and you see somebody snatching, or clean and jerking a barbell? Many people are dragged into fearing these lifts because of the words of a few. Over time these lifts have been credited as being the most dangerous form of exercise in existence. What people don't understand is this: exercises do not injure people, people injure people . It's the uneducated lifter using poor form and inadequate warm- up that results in injuries. The safety of Olympic lifting has been documented in several studies. One study has shown that Olympic lifting has the lowest number of injuries per 1. If you look at the best Athletes in the Olympic Games 9. Olympic weightlifting in their program. The answer is clearly that both have much to offer because each is radically different from the other. All one has to do is read the research literature to understand that there are different forms of strength. There's speed- strength (a combo of starting strength and explosive strength). Then there's both aerobic and anaerobic strength endurance. Then there's limit strength. Powerlifting, for the first time in history, was devised to test one's limit strength. But let's get into Olympic lifting, and try to discern whether there's something there for athletes from other sports to benefit from. Pound for pound, Olympic weightlifters have a greater level of speed- strength than any other class of athletes in all of sport. This fact was made very clear during a massive scientific expedition carried out on the athletes at the Mexico City Olympics in 1. Sports scientists found that Olympic lifters were able to both vertical jump higher than any class of athletes (including the high jumpers), and run a 2.
